Pump mechanical seal type and How we select material ?
1, Water pump mechanical seal
Mechanical seal are commenly to be used in water pump. I.E. Pipeline pump, Sewage pump, Swimming pool pumps, Marine, Submersible pump, Seawater pump, Waste water pump etc.
How can we select suitable material for different application ?
Clean water medium: Under this condition, we always select carbon(graphite) seal face match with Sic seal face. Carbon(graphite) material can easily cause fluid film between rotary seal and stationary seal. Fluid film is vital for Sealing and increase life span of mechanical seal. But there is a disadvantage of this material combination, which can be damaged if there is any solid particle in the media. In this case, NBR, EPDM or viton will be selected as secondary seal material based on actual temperature.
Sewage condition: For this operation medium, the ideal opption will be tungsten carbide seal face match with tungsten carbide seal face. This combination can make mechanical seal have a strong ability of abrasion resistance. But it can not work in a strong corrosion medium.
Another compromised combination is Sic and Sic. It’s most common seal face combination for mechanical seal material in corrosive application. The reason is SIC have more economic price, light weight and easier to be fabricated than tungsten carbide.
In this case, NBR, EPDM or viton will be selected as secondary seal material based on actual temperature and medium.
2, Metal bellow seal for high temperature pump
Metal bellow seal are ideal choice for low temperature and high temperature medium. I.E. High temperature hot oil pump, Hydrogenation feed pump, Bottom pump of fractionation tower, Pressure reducing slag oil pump and diesel pump.
How can we select material, properly ?
No solid particle: Carbon and SIC will be adequate, as for secondary seal, we will select flexible graphite.
Solid particle medium: SIC and SIC.
3, Mechanial seal for pulp pump
For this specific pulp pump, it is always used to transfer pulp fluid in paper making industry.
Mostly, we will choose SIC and SIC to be seal face. But some time, carbon and SIC is also optional based on actual condition.
4, Mechanical seal for automobile application
F series water pump seal are always been used in automobile.
