Mechanical Seal System: Flush & Support Checks

Tag: Mechanical Seal System: Flush & Support Checks

A mechanical seal system connects the seal to its flush supply, cooling circuit, support vessel and monitoring instruments. This guide helps maintenance teams review those connections before replacing a seal or requesting a support-system quotation.

Start with a circuit map, not just a seal model

Mark the fluid source, direction of travel, seal connection and return destination on one sketch. Add the instrument locations and the drawing revision. A photograph of a reservoir alone cannot show whether the installed circuit matches the intended arrangement.

Separate three support functions

• Process-side flush: supplies fluid to the seal chamber. Plan 11 routes pump discharge through a restriction to the chamber; Plan 32 uses an external flush source.

• Between-seal support: serves the space between the two seals. In conventional liquid dual-seal arrangements, buffer fluid operates below seal-chamber pressure and barrier fluid above it. Plan 52 and the Plan 53 family serve different arrangements and are not interchangeable labels.

• Atmospheric-side service: a quench or leakage collection connection has a separate purpose. Identify it from the seal drawing instead of treating every port as a flush inlet.

A practical operating record

Record observations under the same operating condition so that the next reading is comparable. Include the time, pump load and whether the unit is starting, running steadily or stopping.

• Pressure: record the measurement location and units alongside seal-chamber and support-system readings. A discharge gauge is not a direct measurement of seal-chamber pressure.

• Temperature: note the supply and return measurement points and available cooling utility conditions.

• Fluid condition: record the specified fluid, visible contamination and refill quantities with dates.

• Circulation: record the installed flow indication, alarms and any recent pipework or valve changes. Pressure alone does not confirm circulation.

• Leakage: identify the observed location and operating condition rather than recording only “seal leaking.”

Use symptoms to organize the review

A rising return temperature: compare the load and cooling conditions with the previous record, then review circulation against the approved drawing. The temperature trend alone does not identify a failed component.

A changing vessel level: compare refill history, fluid appearance and pressure trends. Do not assume that every level change proves an inboard seal failure.

A problem after maintenance: compare port connections, fluid grade and instrument locations with the documented arrangement. Have operating changes assessed against the equipment supplier’s instructions; this checklist does not specify valve positions or pressure setpoints.

Plan 11: the first worked topic in this collection

Begin with our mechanical seal piping Plan 11 article to follow a discharge-to-seal-chamber circuit. The plan number describes an arrangement, not a universal choice for every pumped liquid. Fluid properties and operating conditions still need review.

Information to send for a system review

Provide the pump and seal identification, seal drawing, current piping sketch, process fluid and solids information, operating temperature and pressure range, support-fluid specification, available utilities and a short event history. Label unknown values as unknown instead of substituting a pump nameplate maximum for an operating reading.

For seal geometry and application inputs, use the separate mechanical seal design checklist. For a review of an existing circuit, contact Fluid Tech Service with the records above.
