John Crane Replacement Seals: Models & Selection Guide

Looking for a John Crane replacement seal? Start with the complete seal reference, the installation dimensions and the pump operating conditions. This guide links to our replacement options for Type 1, 2100, 58U, 606 and 609 and explains the information needed to assess a suitable configuration.

The products discussed here are replacement options. A shared type number or shaft diameter alone does not establish interchangeability with an original John Crane seal. Confirm the complete assembly and material specification before ordering.

John Crane replacement seal models

Type 1 and 2100: See our Type 1 replacement seal and 2100 replacement seal pages for elastomer bellows options. Compare the installed working length, shaft size and stationary seat dimensions for the specific pump.

58U: Review the 58U replacement seal page for an O-ring pusher option. Include the complete original reference and a drawing so that the rotating assembly, seat and available installation space can be checked together.

606 and 609: Visit the 606 metal bellows replacement and 609 metal bellows replacement pages. Do not treat these references as interchangeable; the required assembly dimensions and materials must be reviewed for each application.

Dimensions to check before selecting a replacement

Provide a dimensioned drawing whenever possible. Record the shaft or sleeve diameter, the installed working length, the stationary seat outside diameter and thickness, and the seal chamber space. Identify the seat mounting arrangement and any drive features. For a cartridge assembly, also provide the gland, sleeve, bolt pattern and connection details.

Distinguish the installed working length from the free length of a removed seal. State whether dimensions are in millimetres or inches. Photographs help identify the construction, but they do not replace measured dimensions or an assembly drawing.

Operating conditions and materials

Include the pumped liquid, concentration, solids content, operating temperature, seal chamber pressure and shaft speed. State the normal conditions and any startup, cleaning or other operating extremes. Record the existing seal face, secondary seal and metal materials if known, together with any flushing or support arrangement.

If the old seal leaked or failed early, describe when the problem occurred and include photographs of the worn parts. Replacing a seal without reviewing the installation and operating conditions may leave the underlying problem unresolved. Final material and operating-limit confirmation should be made for the quoted configuration.

Information to send for a replacement quotation

Send the pump manufacturer and model, the full seal type and part number including suffixes, the required quantity, and any original drawing or parts list. Add clear photographs of the markings, rotating assembly and stationary seat, plus the dimensions and operating data listed above. Identify whether you need a complete assembly or individual components.

Use our contact page to request a replacement seal review. If a dimension or material is unknown, mark it as unknown so it can be clarified before the replacement specification is confirmed.

Common replacement questions

Is the same shaft diameter enough to select a seal? No. Working length, seat fit, assembly design, materials and operating conditions must also be checked.

Can I order using only “Type 1”, “2100” or “609”? Use the type as a starting point. Supply the full reference, size and configuration details; the short model name alone does not describe every required feature.

What if the original part number is unreadable? Provide the pump details, photographs and a dimensioned sketch. Any uncertain identification should be resolved before ordering.
